The return of the alarm clock: why we’re putting phones down at bedtime

There was a time when the alarm clock was a bedroom essential. Then came the smartphone, and suddenly one device could wake us up, tell us the time, entertain us, and sit within arm’s reach all night.

But perhaps we’re beginning to question whether it really needs to do all of those things?
More recently, the alarm clock is making something of a comeback, offering a simple alternative to keeping your phone beside your bed. And while there is nothing ‘wrong’ with using your phone as an alarm, there are definitely some compelling reasons to put it down at bedtime…

A bedside table without the screen

One of the biggest advantages of a traditional alarm clock is that it does not come with notifications, emails, or social media.

Keeping your phone next to the bed can make it tempting to check one last message, scroll through a few posts, or reach for it the moment you wake up which means your brain is immediately ‘on’ the moment you open your eyes. An alarm clock, by comparison, has a much simpler purpose: it tells you the time and wakes you up.

Moving your phone further away from your bedside can therefore help create a clearer boundary between screen time and sleep time, while making your bedside table feel a little more considered, too.

Alarm clocks are the stylish bedside essential

Alarm clocks are practical, but that doesn’t mean they have to look purely functional. A well designed clock can become part of your bedroom styling, adding character to a bedside table and subtly enhancing the room. From classic analogue alarm clocks to contemporary digital designs, there is an alarm clock to suit every space.

Think of your alarm clock in the same way you would choose a lamp, vase, or piece of artwork. It’s something you will see every morning, so it should be something you enjoy looking at!

Should you choose an analogue or digital alarm clock?

Analogue alarm clocks offer the charm of a traditional clock face, while digital alarm clocks provide a clear, instantly readable display and useful features such as snooze functions.

The choice comes down to personal preference and the feel you want to create in your bedroom.

Time for a change..?

Putting your phone down at bedtime doesn’t necessarily mean a complete lifestyle overhaul. Sometimes, small changes can make a difference.

An alarm clock gives you a simple way to keep your phone at a distance while still making sure you wake up on time. And unlike a smartphone, it will never tempt you to check your notifications at 11.47pm!
