The inspiration behind some of Jones's best-loved clock designs

Jones Clocks is a British brand that embodies the fusion of timeless design and modern functionality. Founded in Oswestry, Shropshire, Jones Clocks is part of the Newgate World group, famous for the iconic Newgate Clocks.
Jones Clocks is headed up by Jim and Chloe Read, who founded the brand with a desire to craft exceptional clocks that not only keep pace with the latest interior trends, but also enrich the spaces they inhabit. Renowned for their distinctive style, Jones Clocks have become a symbol of quality, affordability and innovation in timekeeping.
We spoke to creative director and chief designer, Jim Read, about the design inspiration behind some of Britain’s best loved clocks…

The ticking heart of a home

When asked what inspires him when it comes to designing a Jones Clock, Jim said:
“Its funny. Some people say they don’t need clocks because they have their phones for the time. But clocks are special for many reasons. Mainly they’re always there. Always on. Always working.
When you’re rushing around the house in the morning with armfuls of clothes, towels, mugs, trays and you’re trying not to be late, it’s the best thing to have a clock or two adorning your walls to keep track. So of course clocks have a wonderfully practical side. But that aside, I think there’s the magic that clocks just exude. They are the ticking heart of a home.”

Taking inspiration from nostalgia

Both Jim and Chloe’s parents were antique dealers, and Jim has always had a fascination with the past, with vintage influences flowing through his work. So it’s probably no surprise that Jim states that clocks “evoke nostalgia”, and cites this as an influence in his designs- “I have a vast knowledge of vintage, retro and antique clocks, and we have a vast collection of vintage clocks. I also have every book and catalogue on vintage and retro clocks that exists!”
However, Jim’s design influences are far from being rooted solely in the past; in fact, one of the things he loves about clocks is that they are symbols of “modernism and science.” Jim said: “I study current trends and I’m constantly looking at future trends, trying to ascertain what is coming next. I’m inspired by looking around London, visiting museums and galleries, and the most innovative stores.”
Interestingly, Jim’s inspiration for Jones designs can come in other shapes and forms than clocks, with Jim stating that products such as cars and even clothes can inspire his designs.
Whether inspired by the past, or looking to the future, all Jones Clocks are the result of meticulous design and development processes that ensure each clock is not just a timepiece but a work of art. The team at Jones prides themselves on delivering the best quality and most thoughtfully considered designs on the market today, all at very affordable prices.
Jim said “with Jones Clocks, we wanted to create a world where timekeeping meets great design. Our designs are about celebrating the beauty of every moment.”
