How to apply colour psychology when it comes to choosing your wall clock

When House and Garden compiled their Top 100 for interior trend predictions, Olivia Outred suggested that we would soon see an increase in the use of ‘colour therapy’ in interior design. Also known as chromotherapy, colour therapy was practiced by the Ancient Egyptians, and is a method of using colour for its healing qualities. For example, blue was thought to treat depression and pain (it’s where the expression ‘feeling blue’ comes from.) This theory eventually evolved into the concept of ‘colour psychology’- the idea that there are links between certain colours and emotions. It's a theoretical approach that explores how colours influence human behaviour, such as our moods and feelings, as well as our physical health.

Knowing the basics of colour psychology can influence the way we choose what we put into our living spaces. By understanding the impact that certain colours have on our mood and emotions, we can learn to tailor our spaces in a way that brings us a sense of peace, happiness, or stimulation.

How can we use colour psychology in interior design?

Because different colours generate different feelings, it's important to think about the kind of mood you want to create in your room, and which colours will help you do so when choosing items to bring into your space.

Whilst not everyone will interpret colours in exactly the same way, the below is a good starter to guide to the type of emotions that are generally elicited by certain colour families:
  • Warm colours such as deep reds and browns create a cosy or comfortable feeling in a room.
  • Cool colours, such as light blues and greens, can be used to create a calming effect.
  • Bright, bold colours such as orange and hot pink can be used to stimulate activity or creativity.
  • Pastel tones are perfect for rooms that need to feel comforting or serene.
  • Neutral shades like black, white, and grey can be used as anchors to help other bright colours stand out.

Using colour psychology to choose your wall clock

At Jones Clocks, we firmly believe that wall clocks are so much more than just a timekeeping device: they are also a piece of artwork, and a focal point in your room. All of which makes it even more important that you choose a wall clock in a colour that elicits the right type of emotion every time you look at it, and enhances the overall feel of the space you are trying to create.

Let’s explore the impact that different colours of clocks can have, based on the principles of colour psychology…

Orange wall clocks

Orange is an energetic and vibrant colour that exudes warmth and enthusiasm. An orange clock can inject a sense of fun and creativity into a room, making it ideal for spaces like kitchens or home offices. This colour is known to stimulate social interaction and cheerfulness, creating an uplifting atmosphere, which may explain why our orange Movie wall clock is one of our bestsellers! Orange wall clocks are perfect for people who want to bring energy and optimism into their living spaces.

Pale blue is associated with calmness, trust, and serenity. A blue clock evokes a sense of tranquillity, making it ideal for bedrooms or any space where relaxation is the main aim. Pale blue also reflects clarity and focus, which can help create a peaceful and productive environment.

Cream wall clocks

Cream is a neutral and soft colour that conveys warmth and subtle elegance. A cream clock is versatile, blending seamlessly with most interior styles. Its soothing and understated tone adds a touch of sophistication while maintaining a comforting and welcoming feel. Cream works beautifully in living rooms or spaces aiming for a classic and timeless look.

Grey wall clocks

In colour psychology, grey is often associated with neutrality, balance, and sophistication. Grey is a non intrusive colour that can evoke feelings of calm and composure, but may also be perceived as detached or subdued if overused, so it’s a good idea to use a grey clock as a grounding colour in a room that may generally be decorated in other shades.

Pastel coloured wall clocks

Pastel shades like pale pink, nougat, and lavender offer a sense of softness and nostalgia. These colours evoke feelings of calm, tenderness, and creativity. A pastel coloured wall clock can add a whimsical or romantic touch to a space, making it great for bedrooms, nurseries, or cosy living areas. These hues are gentle on the eyes and create a soothing atmosphere while adding charm.

It pairs well with natural textures like wood or stone, enhancing a sense of calm. A sage green wall clock is perfect for kitchens, living rooms, or offices aiming for a balance of energy and tranquillity.
