At Jones, all of our clocks have build in moulded hanging brackets. However, some clocks (including some by our sister brand Newgate), have a metal hanging rim. We’ve discussed how to hang each type of clock, so you’re covered whichever design you choose.
Hanging a clock with a metal hanging rim
Many clocks, particularly those with a more classic or vintage design, come with a metal hanging rim on the back. This is essentially a small circular hook or loop that is attached to the clock frame, and it requires a sturdy fixing on the wall.
To hang a clock with a metal rim:
- Choose the right fixing for your wall. A simple nail or screw may suffice for lightweight clocks, but for heavier clocks, you’ll need a wall anchor or rawl plug to ensure it’s securely fastened.
- Mark your desired height using a pencil, and use a spirit level to ensure the clock will hang straight.
- Install a screw or hook into the wall, leaving enough of the head exposed for the rim to catch onto. Ensure the fixing has a large lip to prevent the clock from slipping off.
- Hang your clock by sliding the metal rim over the screw or hook. Double-check that the clock is secure and not wobbly before stepping back to admire your work.
Hanging a clock with built-in metal or moulded acrylic brackets
Some modern clocks come with built-in hanging mechanisms, such as metal or acrylic brackets moulded into the back. These brackets offer a more secure fit but require specific attention when installing.
Here’s how to hang a clock with built-in brackets:
- Check the bracket design to see how far the clock will sit from the wall. This will influence the type of fixing you need.
- Install the appropriate wall fixing, based on your wall type and the weight of the clock. For plasterboard walls, you’ll need a plasterboard anchor; for brick or concrete walls, use wall plugs and screws.
- Measure the bracket placement on the back of the clock. Make corresponding marks on the wall and ensure they’re level.
- Screw or fix your chosen anchors into the wall, ensuring they are securely placed. For larger clocks, you may need two fixings, one for each bracket.
- Carefully mount your clock by lining up the brackets with the screws or hooks. Ensure the clock is level and securely in place.
Choosing the right wall fixing for your clock
When selecting the right type of wall fixing, it’s essential to consider both the weight of the clock and the material of your wall. For lightweight clocks, standard picture hooks or small screws will usually suffice. However, for larger or heavier clocks, you’ll need stronger support.
- Plasterboard walls: Use plasterboard anchors or toggle bolts, as these provide extra strength and won’t pull out of the wall over time.
- Brick or concrete walls: Use wall plugs and screws for a secure fit.
- Wooden walls: Regular screws should work well as they can grip securely into wood.
No matter what type of wall or fixing you use, always ensure your clock is anchored securely. The fixing should have a wide lip or head to stop the clock from slipping off.
Ensure your wall is strong enough for your clock
Before hanging any clock, make sure the wall is capable of holding the weight of the clock. For heavier clocks, plasterboard walls may need additional reinforcement, such as finding studs or using specialist anchors. Always test the fixings by applying gentle pressure to ensure they are sturdy enough to hold your clock.
The ideal height for hanging your wall clock
When it comes to deciding how high to hang your clock, aim for the middle of the clock to sit at eye level—typically between 145 and 155 cm from the floor. If the clock is in a room where people will be sitting most of the time, such as a living room, consider hanging it slightly lower so it’s easily viewable while seated.
For kitchens or hallways, where people are more likely to be standing, hanging the clock a bit higher can ensure it’s visible. Always consider the proportions of the room and the size of the clock when deciding on the final height.
Hanging your wall clock
Hanging a wall clock is a great way to enhance the decor of any room, but it’s important to get it right. By choosing the appropriate wall fixings, ensuring your wall can support the weight of your clock, and positioning it at the ideal height, you can enjoy a beautifully hung clock that not only tells the time but also adds a touch of style to your home.
Note: Ensure you use a wall fixing appropriate for the type of wall and type of clock hanging system. Ask a professional builder or tradesman if you are unsure what sort of wall fixing you should use. Make sure your wall is strong enough to hang your clock from and ensure your suitable fixing is anchored securely to the wall. Your fixing must have a suitably large lip on it to prevent your clock from falling off it.
